Beginning the Garden
Last week my friend Joy and I started planting the vegetable garden.......
What? In the snow?!?! You betcha! But indoors with peat pellets!
We planted the seeds that will transplant well, and need a longer growing season. Like sugar pumpkins, zucchini, corn and beans. Also broccoli and cauliflower, which like the cool spring weather, but not snow.
After soaking the pellets and watching them expand, we poked the seeds into holes we made with a pencil, then covered the seeds back up with the peat.
The little green houses were then put in the sun room window to insure plenty of light. It snowed 2 more days last week after we planted, but doggone if the broccoli hadn't already sprouted 3 days later!
This past weekend and first couple of days this week have been warm and sunny, so everything busted through and stretched out in record time! Love it when that happens!
I was able to catch the beans in just about every stage of growth......... pushing up through the dirt.....
.....throwing off the seed covering.....
.....getting its first true leaves.....
.....stretching upwards.....
.....ready to be planted!
Cucumber seed coming up.....
.....wearing a little bitty dirt/seed bonnet!
Corn came up all at the same time!
You can see the reflections in the water droplets!
Corn root. They have thick, long roots!
Today we will transplant the seedlings into 4" pots. Maybe, just maybe, we will have a good garden this summer :o)
